I noticed this post over on 4geclipse and really thought it was great and went very indepthp, the guy definetly seems to know what hes doing.

Consider were on the same page as the Eclipse i leave you with this:

-A guy post asking why his car feel like it has lost performance after adding an exhaust and intake.

so i put on a megnaflow cat back and the fujita cai and now it seems like my car lost some of its pick up and go, is there a reason for this?

-Clovisman reply's with this:

Actually you need to disconnect both Positive and Negitive cables from the battery. After they are both disconnected, ground the Positive cable to dissipate any stray voltage. Reconnect both battery leads, Positive first, then Negitive.

Next, turn your ignition key to the "ON" position but do not start the car. The car will go through a reset process. You'll hear clicking under the hood, some dash lights will blink, and your stereo will go through a setup. This will take less than two minutes. Turn key to "OFF" position for 10 seconds.

Start the car and let it idle for 10 minutes, it might idle rough but it will stable out. Turn car off for ten seconds, then turn it back on and drive the car normal for the first 25/30 miles, do not WOT the engine.

This process will allow your car to relearn its new parameters. Any time you do anything that will effect the engines performance, you need to reset the ECU. Whether it's a CAI, spark plugs, exhaust system, etc. But still, any time you do any maintenance on your car, you should disconnect the battery. Computers hate to be shorted out Confused .

- I have deffinetly been left a victim to this and even though Ive know to disconnect the battery after doing so I didnt know it went this into detail.

hmm.. idk if i completely believe that'll work with our ecu..
if that would really work there'd be no reason for controllers.
and without a controller.. i wouldnt really trust any dyno results saying it worked.
its confusing with the "learning ecu"

it is necessary...the car will eventually try and revert to stock over time....but the ECU does need to be reset, 100%. from what i understand our ECU is a real pain in the ass

It works for less than 3k miles though...my general rule of thumb is before a race that night I'll reset my ECU.

that answers that.
but.. if its done every oil change.. standard oil change.. just call it regular maintenance.

it said that the stereo will go through some kind of set up. What if i have an aftermarket stereo in now and took the stock on out?

the eclipse stereo is different so ours wont goto into setup..and if your running aftermarket youll probably lose your settings and presets as all radios would

i say the same, it works but only lasts about 3000 and you feel the differance before and after. this is something i see never see talked about anywhere, i've lived by the rule of reset for 15yrs and thought everyone did the same. a sort of comon knowledge lets say. Old school i guess. But getting the AEM F/c and vego, and it will fix that. i just read Aem f/c on a stock 4g added 30 hp. no sh!t. cant wait.

^^^ that is probably not the normal outcome, 30hp+ on bone stock car, sounds like the fairy tale of piggy+tune results...but regardless, once i get into headers/exhaust that is when i shall be on the piggy back myself, no more resets...

do you know if proflow does them-the heads, i got a guy here who said he'll bench them a match flow them but to drive it out of my garage i'm going to need to be able time it and maybe add some fuel, so i gonna get the aem first.

i did it yesterday..and yeh it is an old school factor..usually when you get work done to the car the battery would be off anyway so itll reset but yeh definetly it goes back every couple thousand miles..

i deff feel the difference and always have when its been fixed or ive workedo n te car..

Wide Open Throttle

Thanks! I just found it on wikipedia and got better details.

How bad is it to WOT without doing the whole car reset.

My dad told me its TERRIBLE for the transmission, and that got me paranoid to floor it, as we all know transmissions are not cheap!

Thanks joncav!

yes yes. and if im being completely honest.. i just recently realized that it meant wide open throttle ... just because "WOOOOOOOT" just happens to be the sound the 3.8 makes when the throttle is wide open. i thought we were just imitating the sound :D

I also have a transmission cooler - it's not going to hurt it to go WOT a few times a day but if you intend on "beating it like a read headed step child" I HIGHLY recommend it. :D
